Leaders from 196 countries will attend the climate conference in Glasgow this November.

The meeting will lead to agreements for action to combat climate change and its consequences, such as sea level rise and extreme weather.

Scientists warn global temperatures have risen faster since 1970 than any time in the past 2,000 years, a new report says.

This meeting, organized by the United Nations, called COP26 (COP is an acronym for Conference of the Parties), is an attempt to bring climate change back under control. It is a time when world leaders will engage in debates about whether actions are sufficient to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, a landmark global commitment to combat global warming.

The agreement seeks to halt the rise in temperatures to “3.6 degrees Celsius” and aims to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, but scientists have warned that efforts are falling short and that if they remain at their current levels, warming could reach 3 degrees Celsius.

Each country will be asked to “set the target” for greenhouse gas reductions by 2030, and will also be asked to provide a path to achieving the “same goal” of not adding more greenhouse gases to the atmosphere than it removes by 2050.

Fuel combustion is the main cause of greenhouse gas emissions, so the path to achieving the goal will include:
Stop relying on coal for energy
Stop deforestation
Switch to electric vehicles
Invest in renewable energy

People in poor countries are on the frontlines of the impacts of global warming. In addition to droughts and heatwaves, rising sea levels are engulfing island nations, and saltwater intrusion is destroying farmland. By COP26, more than 100 developing countries had outlined their needs for aid, such as:
Funding for combating and adapting to climate change
Remedy for the impact it will have on them

Funding for the transition to a green economic structure
These countries need clarity on this issue, otherwise the COP26 meeting may be worthless and end in failure.

Rich countries have pledged up to $100 billion by 2020 to help poor countries, but only about $79 billion has been pledged so far.

In 2018, about three-quarters of funding was in the form of loans, which is a barrier to access for poor countries, many of whom are already in debt. This issue, known as the “debt reduction”, is a major issue that will be discussed at this conference.

There are high hopes for significant progress on combating rising temperatures from the outcome of COP26. Rich countries will be asked to pledge USD 100 billion more in funding than they already pledged, and an agreement for all countries in the world to reduce their dependence on coal power, even if it is difficult.

There will also be increased pressure on all countries to increase the ambition of their targets, not only in terms of reducing greenhouse gases, but also in terms of providing assistance to the community and other countries affected by climate change.
