This webpage provides information on REDD+ safeguards in Thailand and shows its progress on SIS development. It also highlights the country's commitment to engage in global mechanisms to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from the forest and land use sectors while ensuring positive social and environmental outcomes. Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation or REDD+ is a major framework initiated by UNFCCC in 2005 to encourage developed and developing countries to work together to halt deforestation and forest degradation. This is done through the conservation, sustainable management and restoration of forests, while also enhancing governance and participation, as well as improving the livelihoods of local and forest dependent communities.
The Government of Thailand recognizes that the forest sector can significantly contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation. It is participating in REDD+ with financial support from the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) of the World Bank (since 2009), among others. Thailand completed its FCPF REDD+ readiness project at the end of 2021. (link to FCPF Thailand page)
The country has continued its commitment towards REDD+ and other international mechanisms to address climate change. Therefore, Thailand will need to meet the requirements embodied in UNFCCC decisions and related funding or international organizations that have developed safeguard standards. These include the safeguards requirements for REDD+ under the UNFCCC: ensuring that social and environmental safeguards are addressed and respected throughout the implementation of REDD+; establishing a Safeguards Information System or SIS; and periodically submitting a report on how safeguards are being addressed and respected, known as a Summary of Information.
